BLE Auto Shutoff USB Charger

This charger allows my phone to tell it when battery is full, so it will turn off the power.

My phone's got some neat gimmicky features like being thick as a brick, and having a FLIR thermal camera built-in. It does get the job done, but it is working with a pretty well out of date circa 2016ish middle of the road generic Android chassis and software. Beyond the predator vision it's pretty light in the bells and whistles department. 

One absence is any ability to stop charging itself once full. An annoying notification to the user asking to unplug is plan (A) right now.

This project has two main components:

1. "Smart" charger based on Itsy Bitsy nrf52840 and a TPS22917 load switcher breakout. Frankensteined together with one of those power only USB cables that are so often a source of frustration. Was I just looking for an excuse to cut one up to exact some revenge? No comment.

2. An Android app that communicates via BLE to the Itsy Bitsy nrf52840 to tell it when the battery is full and thus request that it shut off the power coming in to the phones USB charging port.

    I globbed some hot glue on the USB cables for a bit of extra strength and adapted an old box design for use with this project and got one printed up. The lid is printing as I write this log.

    At approx 15:00 local time we had the first successful test of the power load switch circuit. 

    For this PoC I'm using the user SWITCH button on the Itsy nrf to toggle the USB charging on and off when it's pressed.

    Everything appears to be working successfully hooray!

    Next step on the software side is to move over to using BLE to send the trigger to switch charging on/off. 

    For hardware I think I'm going to hit the USB cable wires with some hot snot for strain relief, print up a little box to stuff it inside of and call it good.

  • PCB is almost ready

    The headers and all of the wires are soldered onto the PCB. The only things left to solder are the load switch breakout and the input USB cable.  After those we should be able to try it out!
