This three-part series on medium details our design and build process, as well as our physics-based simulator that we used to try and generate trajectories of the ball flight.
We just finished submitting videos for our virtual challenge yesterday! The season's a wrap and here's a short GIF of our automated launching process. We use a vision system to determine the distance to target and set the flywheel speed and launch angle using a look-up table!
Early in the season (late January) we assembled a prototype made of plywood and tested our flywheel setup. We shot from distances up to 20(ft) and tested accuracy, how much we need to compress the ball, the inertia of the flywheels, and more.
