Problem

Sargassum is a natural, even essential, part of the Caribbean's ecosystems but these recent blooms are having a devastating impact on the region, both ecologically and economically. Many tourist areas and islands were inundated this year. It piles up on beaches, sometimes many feet thick covering large area of shore waters and begins to decay. In the process of decay, the hydrogen sulphide that gets released smells like rotting eggs and many resorts had to close their doors. Hydrogen sulphide is dangerous to humans in large quantities, causing headaches, dizziness, nausea and even asthma has been reported in some local communities. Since the species are Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans float they block sunlight creating dead zone beneath them because plants under need sunlight to survive. The cleanup and removal of sargassum is an expensive task because they come in large quantities at fast rate which makes the traditional and modern clean up method very high cost dependent.

Solution

This project is about building a semi automation cleanup mechanism that can clean and collect the piled up Sargassum in shore land without ground accessibility interference. This is done by installing small thickness metal structures with height h in x distance away from each other that can support I bar metal which act as a rail for a structure that can collect, store and transport the piled up Sargassum in the land shore without altering the ground accessibility that may become inconvenient. The I bar rail is installed according to the path the Sargassum piles up in the shore and the collecting structure can travel on the rail because of the roller installed at its top. The collection process is done through manual labor by simply pushing the Sargassum in the collection Tank and a button controlled small electrical motor installed at the roller will transport the structure via the rail and the he collected Sargassum in the holding tank will be easy for transportation to sites where the Sargassum is processed for further use to crate circular economy.

Constrain to overcome

The main limitation this design needs to overcome is installation of the support structure for the I bar rail. This is because the structure needs to be firm that can with stand the load of the collection tank for the Sargassum and luckily since we are constructing this structure in sandy ground because skin friction property of sand will help big time. all we have to do is force the structure go down until some depth by impact until it holds and the skin friction of the sand will take care of the rest.

In order to give this project an additional advantage used when Sargassum is not being cleaned up, it is equipped with a roller coaster chair for tourist to enjoy the shore of the Caribbean which will widen the project scope.
