MX-5 KITT Instrument Cluster

An ESP32-based digital instrument cluster for a Mazda MX-5 NA

Similar projects worth following
A digital instrument cluster for the first generation Mazda MX-5 (NA).

The cluster is based on an ESP32 (with all wireless functions disabled). It reads the stock inputs and maps them to internal tables in order to display the correct values.
This is done at a refresh rate high enough to be easily usable inside a car.

An EEPROM chip stores the total mileage of the car.

The case is from a donor stock cluster which includes the mechanism to read the speedo cable.
The faceplate (inspired by KITT) was designed in FreeCAD and CNCed from ABS plastic.
It should be relatively easy to design completely different faceplates as the display is decoupled from the rest of the cluster both in software and in hardware.

Here's a video of the cluster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyitX-sl20o
  • 1 × ESP32
  • 3 × 4N35 optocoupler
  • 1 × 24C256 EEPROM

Knight Rider theme intensifies...

Looks great! Any idea what the legalities are regarding after-market odometers?

Thank you!
I live in Germany. The process here is called "Einzelabnahme" which basically means a guy from TÜV checks that everything works and I get papers that make it legal to have the cluster in my car (and mine only, everyone else would have to get their own approval).

That process is for the entire cluster. It does of course include the odometer, which actually isn't mandatory (I didn't know that either).
Essentially, whether the odo is trusted is up to a potential buyer of the car, but it's legal in itself.
