Hey Greg, pretty cool. Just curious -- have you played with making the display light-emitting? IOW, each segment could be printed in black and act as a shutter to block light coming from inside the display. You might have to include some kind of diffuser behind the segment windows, but that could look really sharp.

Not that it doesn't already look sharp, just a thought.

I had not thought of lighting the segments, but it should not be too difficult to add a diffuser to the bezel and change the segment colors to black.
