This watch has 200 leds and an ESP32 pico for superb light shows

I am building this ESP32 pico watch. It had wifi, BT, mesh, a vibration motor, a RTC, 4 buttons, an usbC connector and, most of all: 192 603 leds you can control. They allow complex light effects.

There are 4 circles of LEDS. The external is for the seconds and will be white. The 2 mid circles are purple for the minutes,. The internal circle is yellow for the hours.

The LED driver is a: IS31FL3733-TQ

Description of the product

The 603-200 is the first watch of a planed line of watches based on the same concept which is inspired by the Japanese TokyoFlash® brand (www.tokyoflash.com). We want to push the concept to a fully modern connected watch capable of establishing communication with your SmartPhone or any other IoT.

This watch is an open source device. The customers and makers have access to all the documentation

  • Kicad-Pcb® files to make correction or updates
  • Arduino IDE Sketches available from www.github.com to update or modify the watch’s behaviour
  • Python code available from www.github.com to update or modify the watch’s behaviour. You get access to hundreds of ESP32 code coming from the makers community.
  • Technical documentation to create new top side displays (sister boatrd) and design add-ons
  • 3D files for CNC and 3D printers for those willing to create enclosure/shells in various material

What the watch can do :

The 603-200 Morphwatch® has been mainly design to produce exciting visual effects with its collertion of  192 leds. There are 4 circles of 603 size format SMD color leds.

  • 1 external circle of 60 WHITE 603 leds for the seconds
  • 2 intermediate circles of PURPLE 603 Leds for the minutes
  • 1 internal circle of YELLOW 603 Leds for the hours

Each LED can be programmed independently with I2C libraries or through PYTHON Script. The user can be very creative with visual effects.

Now the visual effects put aside, the watch has much more to offer because it has a powerfull Espressif® ESP32 PICO D4 chip. Therefore, it is a complete connected modern watch which is capable of interaction with your smartphone through Bluetooth. Using your phone you can use the watch to communicate into a private MESH wireless digital network. You can ask your watch to vibrate when your phone if away (with Bluetooth) or very far away (with WIFI).

With 4 buttons, you can design your watch to trigger a relay, send an emergency email, send a vibration information to another watch  and more….

With MESH ESPNow protocol, each watch can talk to another, sometimes over hundreds of meters : you can build your private long range messenging system outside cellular networks...

You can switch your watch to be an access point, a web server so any one can connect to grab information (a watch business card concept…) And of course, you have guessed already, this watch can tell you the time !

The genesis of this project came from seeing all these millenials with the same i-clock around the wrist. It  was also the fear of loosing control on our wearables with top 3 companies forcing us to accept what they think good for us (for them to be more ironic).

We are not re-inventing everything. This watch is inspired by another opensource project we found on CrowdSupply.com .

Wa wanted to create an hybrid concept of vintage LED watch + connected watch.  We naturally came to an ESP32 PICO D4 chip  which is powerful and super classic 603 led. If the first prototype is ok, we will move the 603 led package to 402 and reduce the watch diameter.

With a set of 192 LED, driven by a classic IS31FL3733-TQ chip, we can have a bunch of cool visual effects we can design with no limitation but creativity.  Each single LED can be controlled independently via I2C.

The ESP32 PICO 4D opens the watch to connectivity with WIFI/BT and most of all ESPNOW which allow us to create a community MESH networks. If there are anough watch, we hope to build a world communication network beside the commercially locked communication network.

The first concept was created using solidworks. This is a cool software to evaluate the possibilities and test various graphic options.

Once the design has been freezed (well nothing is really frozen with me), we used www.kicad-pcb.org pcb board creation software...

  • Soldering steps

I m now at soldering stage.

The esp32 pico d4 board is assembled and seens ok.

The led sister board is also assembled. I need to fix 1 short circuit on the led controller.

  • only press buttons are missing

    Hi .

This week , we are receiving all the components. Most of them are already in house. Only the press buttons are lacking. Probably this week ... cross fingers

    Some news.

Today, we have received the first 5 pcboards to test our wiring an schematic. We are pretty excited as , this evening we will wire the stuff...

  • Mainboard in production

    pcadic08/20/2021 at 17:32 0 comments

We have just sent the mainboard gerber files to www.jlpcb.com for a quantity of 10 prototypes. All the components are orders both on www.mouser.fr and www.aliexpress.com . Both PCB and components should come to the office at the same time.

We are so excited about this.

The mainboard has been created to keep the watch essential modules on board. In the future, it will be possible to update the top sister board with new designs without having to spend too much in money and time.

Ooh, shiny! Nice job! My wrists just started hurting when I thought of hand-soldering all of those LEDS :)

Yes... 192 led to solder is going to be a nightmare :) 603 size is for tests. It tests are ok, I will go down to 402 package size

What battery are you putting in here? I am thinking about trying to make this, but with my napkin-math for LED power draw (with 4 leds on: 1 for the hour,  2 for the mins, and 1 for the seconds) I am getting 0.5 watts which seems like a lot. With a 150mAh battery 3.8 Volts I am getting about an hour of on time, and thats not even factoring in the other components. That being said, I am a noob with electronics, so I've probably made a calculation error somewhere.

EDIT: I didn't see the PWM controller, it makes more sense now.

The art in this project wil by to use/overuse the power savings and sleep modes of the ESP32. of course the leds cannot be on permanently

Very awexome project!  I'd love to TRY to build one.

I was wondering if you had plans to break the ground loop around the PCB antenna?  If you break the ground loop on one (or better two sides of it... top and right), it will likely result in a better signal.

I remove the copper on top and bottom sides. now the antenna performances will probably be the longuest work in tuning

I'm interested to know PCB maker, and the real result, because had bad experience with very thin wire.

I was just thinking of making something like this the other day. I even started arranging LEDs on a PCB haha!

heyhey. The project has been spleeping here for  2 or 3 months . I dediced to reactivate it. I used kicad with a python script to arrange the leds in circles. I'm waiting for the PCB to come...... in 1 or 2 weeks approx
