Key Holder With Automatic File Backup

I wanted to create a file backup system that would allow me to take my data everywhere with me, on an encrypted thumb drive.

This project is designed to allow a user to carry their important files with them on their keys. Its powered by an Omega2+ or raspberry pi, and has a USB port to plug in a thumb drive. When a user goes to hang up their keys, they plug in the USB drive. Then the sbc mounts the encrypted container and opens a SSH port. Duplicati (or whatever backup program they use) then backs up changed files to the USB drive. When the user takes their keys, they unplug the USB drive, and take their important files with them.

Files, hardware assembly, 3d printed cases, and software setup for this project can be found on our Github page :https://github.com/thinklearndo/keychainbackup

The backup software is a curiosity point for me. How did you make it so it backups only the things that needs to be backed up?

You shouldn't put that much weight on a USB connector. The ports and the drives are not designed for that type of load.

Possibly install longer cup hooks and move the USB port to the bottom of the hanger to allow you to hang the keys on the hook while also allowing the USB to be plugged in.

Thanks for the feedback! I was wondering if my keys would be too heavy for the USB port... I like the idea of moving the USB port to bottom of the case, that seems like a better way to do it.

Another idea I was thinking of, was using a dongle or cord to attach the USB cord to the keychain. Then I could plug the USB drive into the port and hang the keys off the hook. The hook supports the weight that way. But its kind of annoying, the dongle I tried it with is longer than I like. So I don't think I'll like having that in my pocket with my keys...
