Version 3
11/19/2025 at 00:44 • 0 commentsVersion 3 has arrived! It looks just like version 2 on the outside, but it has a few big changes. These changes has made it more robust and made the display much more reliable.

The new version now uses a Esp32-S3 DevKit from Expressif. This DevKit has all of the I/O pins I needed without the I2C port expansion chips. The CPU board uses fewer SMD components overall as well. I replaces the SMD resistors and transistors for driving the digits with through hole components.
The changes to the code includes
- Migrated to version 5.4 IDF build tool.
- Made the menus even more object oriented
- Expanded the JSON messaging
- Added rudimentary Home-Assistant support
- Integrated support for the Govee H5100 bluetooth temperature sensors.
The display board has not changed at all.
The code can be found here: https://sourceforge.net/p/nixiestat-3/code/ci/master/tree/

Now for a little Zen!
07/09/2022 at 11:21 • 0 commentsOkay, While working on the case I had a very Zen moment and re-laid out the display board. It now only has 4 digits and a very small touch keypad.
I also added a real-time clock. I am working at hardening it so it can survive me going on vacations. This means it has to handle a reboot and not have access to any of the sensors except that one that is attached to the thermostat itself. The RTC removed the dependency of getting the system time from network.
The case was made out of 1/4" cherry wood that was milled using my zenbot cnc.
The photos do not show the super cap that is used to keep the time
