To make it even louder I have set this up with a dual supply (2x 9v batteries). This does exhibit much of the characteristic sounds of the Crackle Box but more experimentation would probably extend the sonic options.  There are notable differences between the 709 and its Soviet-era relative:

The 709 has a simple NPN differential pair. The Soviet-era chip has PNP darlington inputs and an all NPN (lower distortion) output stage. This suggests that an additional touch pad to GND or the negative rail would be useful.
