September 19, 2017 - A crude 7 segment display

A project log for The Cardboard Computer - IO is my name

My goal is a 4-bit CPU using recycled cardboard substrate and Diode Transistor Logic. This is an educational platform for me.

Well, I got sidetracked today. I read a post about 7 segment displays and decided to try something out for IO. Please don't laugh but I think that this will fit right in for IO's front panel.

Here is the unpowered 7 segment display using my Christmas leds.

Works surprisingly well with two per segment!

Looks good to me, I was going to do something similar a while back with 7 white LEDs.  I was going to use a 'frosted' plastic or material on top of the LEDS, to defuse the light.  Then on top of that apply stencil cut out on black plasticard of a (large) standard 7-seg display.  The end effect should look quite good.

I might add some kind of diffuser later on once I see how well the finished circuit works. It would look better with something :-)
