In the 70s Texas Instruments made a 18 or 20 DIP integrated circuit with the 7 segments LED displaying 0 to F with a 4 bits input, a internal BCD decoder with latch 4 bits output. I used 2 of them to memorize, display and hold a note in a homemade synthetiser. I don't remember the reference.
