#3 Project log
11/02/2024 at 17:02 • 0 commentsThe first thing was to design the cargo compartments. The idea was to use a light but strong material with a strong enough structure. I thought about carbon fiber panels and honeycomb structures. Carbon fiber panels are light and strong enough, and can be combined with metal structures to strengthen the connection with other parts. So I tried to apply it and came up with this design:

Packages are arranged in the gateway module, which is not difficult to do. I chose a circular layout and I have 318 CTBs (equivalent to 6156.8 kg) and a 1.2m x 1.6m crew path, enough to meet the requirement of 160 CTBs and 0.8m x 1.1m Crew Translation path dimensions.

10/06/2024 at 03:24 • 0 commentsThis research I did from NASA Challenge _ Lunar Gateway Cargo Packing and Storing. Now I try to write a process I created and also improve its design.
First, this sketch is how it works. Before we land on a new planet, we need a gateway flying around that planet with all the necessary cargo. The goal of this design is to handle 160 CTBs(*) (Loaded Bag Mass 4963.5kg) and have a crew path size of 0.8x1.1m.
Most of the designs need simple operation, meaning manual but in some cases I think we need a backup plan for a fully automated gateway like just for landing robots. That's why I challenged myself to design a fully automated option.
*: CTBs mean Cargo transfer bags.
