A simple and afordable DIY projector using a LCD, a LED and a few lenses

This DIY Projector for about $50usd, allows me to project tv, movies, and video games in my wall, with a total screen size of 70" ( from a distance of 1.9m ). It has analog video interface and stereo audio via RCA input, also a 5V output for external devices like raspi. The original purpose of these project was to watch the FIFA soccer world cup of 2010 in a big screen. It is one of my oldest side projects, and I had put aside in the garage until now when I finally finished it.

  • Conclusions & future work

    • Using a smaller LCD display gives better results due to the ligth could shine the entire image. It also allows to use a smaller magnify lenses and reduces the final size of the proyector.
    • More power is always better, then i'm planning to upgrade the proyector with a 30W or 50W Led.
    • Another useful upgrade could be add a condenser lens to the LED to harness the light in a more efficiency way.
    • The AV compatibility is good and cheap to use with common entertainment systems. Now I wanna use the projector with a Raspi via Picast to play movies and content using my phone with internet access.

    Here are some video of the results. Is important to remark that the video quality affects the real visibility of the results, however the light is most focused in the center and the corners are darker, but is very acceptable to see movies and series. The quality decreases when the scene show open planes, for example in a tenis game he ball becomes almost invisible.

    Step 1

    First I want to show the basic scheme of the projector. Including the main parts and some dimmensions.

    To prepare the LED you should paste its back to the heat dissipator. Then make a hole in the back of the box and insert the LED.

    Step 3

    The backside mounting is composed by 5 elements: LED with the heatsink, LED Driver, power socket, power switch, and fan. First it's necessary to open the corresponding holes: central hole for the heatsink, downside corner holes for power switch and plug, upper holes for LED driver screws and cables, finally holes for ventilation and support for the fan.
