🚀 Akira - The Open-Source Gaming Console 🎮 Akira is not just another handheld gaming console; it’s a cybersecurity tool, a retro gaming machine, and a DIY development platform all rolled into one. Designed as an open-source project, Akira invites you to customize, modify, and build upon it, creating a truly personal and unique experience. What is Akira? Created by me after building 8 or 9 different gaming consoles with platforms like Raspberry Pi, ESP32, STM32, and Atmega, Akira is my latest venture into combining gaming with cybersecurity tools in a sleek, minimalistic design. With ESP32-S3 at its heart, Akira is powerful enough to run retro games, cybersecurity applications, and custom-built mini-games. Whether you're into retro classics or building your own tools, Akira has you covered!

Why Akira is Unique

Unlike traditional consoles, Akira isn’t just for gaming. It’s a multifunctional device that blends classic gaming with modern tech utilities:

  • Open-source hardware and software for complete customization
  • WASM-based mini-games for creative game design
  • Retro classics like Tetris, Space Invaders, and more
  • Powerful cybersecurity apps, including:
    • WiFi Analyzer & Sniffer
    • Bluetooth Scanner
    • ESP32 Deauther for WiFi testing
    • USB HID Attack Tool (Rubber Ducky-like)
    • Tor Proxy & VPN Client
    • Offline Password Manager
    • Reverse Engineering Toolkit

What’s Next?

  • Prototype testing and refinement
  • Development of more mini-games and tools
  • Open-source community collaboration to expand Akira’s possibilities
  • Soldering and assembling the first prototype – more updates to follow

Who’s Ready to Play?

The project is open-source, and I’m actively looking for feedback, collaborators, and fellow enthusiasts who want to help take Akira to the next level!

Feel free to DM me if you want to be a part of this exciting journey, contribute to the development, or simply learn more about how Akira works!

Stay tuned for more updates as we build, test, and game together!

  • Pre-launch is live on Crowd Supply + What's coming next

    Artur05/21/2026 at 13:01 0 comments

Big milestone for AkiraConsole — we're officially on Crowd Supply.

The pre-launch page is live and you can subscribe to get notified the moment the campaign goes live: 👉 https://www.crowdsupply.com/pen-engineering/akiraconsole

    Where we are in development:

The hardware design is centered around the ESP32-S3 with dual-core Xtensa LX7, external PSRAM, and a multi-band RF front-end using the CC1121 (Sub-GHz FSK/OOK) and LoRa for longer-range links. The form factor is deliberately compact — field use was the design constraint from day one.

On the software side, AkiraOS v1.4.9 "Glitch" is running on the platform. Key features:

    • WAMR-based WASM sandbox — run untrusted app modules without reflashing
    • Capability Guard — fine-grained permission model per module
    • OTA update engine — push firmware and WASM apps independently
    • AkiraMesh — our sub-GHz mesh networking layer for multi-node deployments

What's next for the build log:

Over the coming weeks I'll be posting detailed updates on:

    • RF front-end design decisions (why CC1121 over SX1276)
    • AkiraOS WASM app lifecycle on a resource-constrained MCU
    • PCB layout challenges for mixed RF + digital
    • Enclosure design in Shapr3D (printed in Carbon Fiber PLA)

If you're into embedded systems, RF, or open-source hardware — subscribe on Crowd Supply and follow along here. Feedback from this community has always pushed the project forward.
