Astra - A smart digital telescope

A Raspberry Pi powered telescope that can stream the footage to your smartphone

I've always wanted to own a telescope, but good ones are surprisingly expensive. So instead of buying one, I decided to build my own. The project started from the excellent open-source PiKon telescope, but I wanted to improve it in a few ways: Large 114mm aperture 700mm focal length Battery powered operation Wireless image streaming to any smartphone No PC required for operation Improved 3D printed components Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W instead of older hardware Built-in web interface with capture controls Smartphone mount for easier pointing The final result is Astra, a fully portable digital telescope built from a PVC pipe, a primary mirror, a Raspberry Pi camera, and a handful of 3D printed parts

Astra is an affordable DIY smart telescope based on the Pikon telescope design. Full build guide in the video. 

How It Works

A reflecting telescope uses a concave primary mirror to collect incoming light and focus it into a tiny real image.

Normally, a Newtonian telescope uses a secondary mirror and an eyepiece to redirect that image toward your eye. 

Astra skips both of those components.

Instead, a Raspberry Pi camera is placed directly at the telescope's focal plane. The camera sensor records the image exactly where an eyepiece would normally form it.

Because the telescope already focuses the light, the camera's own lens must be removed. Otherwise, two optical systems would be trying to focus the same image, resulting in blur.

    Preparing the Parts

    Measure the actual inner diameter of your PVC pipe before printing anything.

    PVC pipes are sold using nominal dimensions, so my "5-inch" pipe actually measured about 5.25 inches internally. I modified the original PiKon models to match.

    I also redesigned several components:

    • Electronics mount
    • Universal tripod mount
    • Smartphone holder
    • Rack-and-pinion camera focuser

    Print the parts using PETG or ABS. PLA can soften in hot weather, potentially affecting optical alignment.

    For the tube itself:

    • Cut it slightly longer than your mirror's focal length.
    • Line the inside with matte black paper or paint.
    • Paint the outside if desired.

    Since a telescope depends on precise alignment of its optical components, dimensional accuracy and print quality are especially important. That's where Justway comes in.
