I’ve been designing PCBs for quite a while, and I always found myself spending far too much time trying to make the silkscreen look good.
KiBuzzard has been an essential tool in my workflow for years, but I often found myself switching between KiCad, SVG editors and image conversion tools just to create labels and graphics.
Kobee Studio started as a fork of KiBuzzard but has gradually evolved into a much more capable graphics editor focused on modern PCB silkscreen design.
It keeps the familiar workflow while adding many of the features I always wished it had.
Current features
* Custom labels
* Pre-made labels
* Component overlays
* Connector overlays
* Large icon library
* QR Codes
* Code 128 barcodes
* Independent subtitles
* Multiple fonts
* 2.54 mm header-aware labels
* KiCad text variable support
* Modern rounded UI
* Live preview
* Direct integration with KiCad
The goal is to make creating professional-looking silkscreen graphics as easy as placing
Kobee Studio is now available in the official KiCad Plugin and Content Manager
A few weeks ago I started working on Kobee Studio, originally as a fork of KiBuzzard, because I wanted an easier way to create consistent labels and graphics for my PCBs without constantly jumping between different tools.
It’s grown quite a bit since then.
Kobee Studio now handles custom PCB labels, fabrication-friendly icons, QR codes, Code 128 barcodes, connector/component overlays, custom SVG graphics, reusable profiles and more.
The biggest milestone this week: Kobee Studio has now been accepted into the official KiCad repository.
That means it can be installed directly from KiCad’s Plugin and Content Manager without adding a custom repository.
The project is open source, and a lot of the development so far has been driven by feedback and feature requests from other KiCad users.
There’s still plenty I want to add, particularly around reusable graphics, connector-aware tools and making PCB documentation/graphics less painful.
If you use KiCad, I’d love to hear what PCB graphics or labelling tools you wish existed.
I’ve just released Kobee Studio v1.4.0, which is probably the biggest update I’ve made to the plugin so far.
A lot of this release has been focused on building a better foundation for where I want to take Kobee Studio. The UI has been completely redesigned to make the growing number of tools easier to navigate, while leaving room for quite a few things I have planned.
Some of the major additions in this release include:
Completely redesigned UI, including a new dark mode
mm and mil support throughout the plugin
Custom SVG assets — you can now import your own icons and symbols and reuse them across projects
Label profiles — save a particular combination of label settings and recall it later
Default profiles — saved profiles can be loaded automatically when Kobee Studio opens
Backup and restore — settings, profiles and custom assets can now be exported to a ZIP and restored later
Installing through KiCad
One of the other big changes isn’t actually inside the plugin: Kobee Studio can now be installed and updated directly through KiCad’s Plugin and Content Manager.
The goal in version 1.3.x is to move to KiCads new API implementation away from the existing SWIG implementation so that the plugin is ready for KiCad version 11.
Alo't of people reported issues on windows on version 1.3.1 which for the most part should be fixed based on my and a couple of peoples tests. I’d really appreciate a few more people testing before I push another stable release.
Next step after that will be to get this into a repo so you can automatically update the plugin direct from KiCad!
After spending far too much time making PCB silkscreens look nice, I decided to build a tool that makes the whole process significantly easier.
Kobee Studio began as a fork of KiBuzzard but has since become its own project with support for icons, QR codes, labels, overlays, barcodes and much more.
I’d love feedback from the community before I continue adding more features.
There’s still plenty planned, but hopefully it’s already useful for anyone who enjoys making boards that look great!
