Heath Company was the leading producer of electronic kits from 1945-1992. They introduced millions of people to kit building, and led many to successful careers in electronics and engineering. Their manuals were exceptionally detailed and educational. Today, they are all but forgotten. Heath introduced the H8 microcomputer kit in 1977. It had an 8080 CPU, 4K of RAM, a 9-digit 7-segment LED display, 16-key pad, and innovative monitor program that let you examine and change memory, registers, I/O, and load and run programs. 2026 is the 50th anniversary of the Heath H8. I decided to make a work-alike reproduction of the H8, using the same 8-bit CPU and front panel interface. It is a true retro-computer, built entirely with vintage components and through-hole techniques. No surface-mount or modern parts here!
