Handheld NixOS

Take diagnostic tools to the field without having fighting Android

A nixOS closure for the ultra-cheap RG552 handheld game console

TL;DR: this exists so you can make your early robotics prototype tooling easily field-portable

Finally, you've prototyped your robot, sensor platform, or other outdoor-project. And it's time to go outside to test

You have all the tooling on your laptop - to connect a controller, a radio, and maybe some other peripherals to interact/debug/fly it.

Now you must decide to either:

  • Drag a laptop outside with you for something that is otherwise a mundane I/O application
  • Cross-compile everything for Android, fight with the permissions system, JNI, NDK, download Android Studio, and all the other foot guns

If only you had a portable platform for quickly running basic scripts + simple UI's, that was easy to obtain, field-ready, and had tactile buttons for when a keyboard or touchscreen isn't what you're.

The rg552 is an ARM-based game console for playing retro games. But retro games are the least interesting use case. It's got:

  • several tactile buttons,
  • two joysticks
  • a touchscreen
  • HDMI out
  • 4 gigs of RAM
  • USB host capability on one port (yes, on nixos it supports hubs)
  • 64gb eMMC and two SD card slots
  • WiFi

This is the perfect hand-controller for low-stakes hobby robotics and other in-field hobbies that need a head unit to run basic tasks.

And this whole thing costs just 150-200 dollars depending on the vendor. I aint buying a raspberry pi for that price. frankly im surprised they can make any money at that price point

  • 1 × rg552 game console game controller, found on Amazon and on the usual suspect Chinese websites
  • 1 × SD Card Adapter To get a RK3399 bootable image onto the SD card.

  • 1
    Build the image

    See GitHub.

    1. get the nix package manager, turn on flakes and nix-command

    2. type in "nix build". you may need an arm linux machine to build the kernel, or will need a VM

I will probably post binaries to make this easier on the GitHub releases page so you can skip this step and download instead/

  • 2
Flash the image onto the provided SD card

An SD card should have come with your RG552 (perhaps 2?)

  • 3
    Boot from the SD Card

The stock uboot already gives the sd cards priority
