A robust, high-efficiency synchronous step-down (Buck) DC-DC converter designed for industrial 24V power networks. It steps down 24V to a stable 5V output (up to 2A), making it ideal for powering industrial sensors, microcontrollers, and logic circuits.
The project is built on a 4-layer PCB using Altium Designer and features comprehensive input protection and EMI filtering for reliable operation in noisy industrial environments.
Technical Specifications
- Core IC: Texas Instruments LMR14030SDDAR (Step-Down Regulator with Integrated MOSFET)
- Input Voltage: 24V DC (Industrial standard)
- Output Voltage/Current: 5V DC @ 2A max
- PCB Stackup: 4 Layers (
Top/Signal-Layer 2/GND-Layer 3/Power-Bottom/Signal) - Component Size: SMD down to 0603 (optimized for hand-soldering with solder paste and hot air reflow).
- Input Protection: Reverse polarity protection via P-channel MOSFET and overcurrent protection via a resettable PTC fuse.
- Filtering: Pi-filter (CLC) at the input to suppress switching noise and EMI.
PCB Layout & Grounding Strategy
- Split Ground Planes: To ensure high noise immunity, the noisy power ground (GND) of the switching converter and the input industrial network ground are strategically isolated/separated, preventing high-frequency switching currents from corrupting sensitive signals.
- Power Integrity (PI): A continuous solid GND plane on Layer 2 provides a low-impedance return path and minimizes loop inductance.
- Thermal Management: Integrated thermal vias under the LMR14030 PowerPAD efficiently dissipate heat to the internal and bottom copper layers.
