Air Compressed Nerf Gun

a custom nerf gun attached to a air tank

Similar projects worth following

We have a big nerf war coming up for youth group. why buy a $50 nerf gun when you could make a killer air gun? I was cleaning one day :( when i found a pvc tube my brother and i used to use as nerf blowguns. anyways, i was just spinning it or something when it hit me- a nerf airgun :D

I finished the initial prototype, I got 5 or 6 good shots off. Of course, that all depends on the size of your pipe- 4 inch, like mine, and the length, I didn't measure mine, i just cut it a ways down. Working on a video, so stay tuned!

I'm putting this here because I didn't have anywhere else to put it. The base instructions are finished! PM me if you guys make one, ill make another log. Also, if somebody wants to send me $40 i'll make one for you, but i can imagine it wouldn't cost much to do it yourself. If I make any mods/improvements on the initial design, i'll post them a log too. Other than that, I dont think ill be doing much more with this project, but follow if i do anyways. Im making a video, like and follow, and suscribe to my channel :D thats where all my hackaday crap goes.

  • 1 × 4 inch pvc pipe, with caps or any air tank, i just didn't want to buy one
  • 1 × tubeless tire valve spring loaded, like a trigger
  • 1 × air hose however long you want it
  • 1 × pvc tube diameter of the dart
  • 1 × various connecting pieces of pipe

  • Breech Load

Finished breech load mechanism. It's too complicated for pictures, so I'm making a video. It's my silencer piece shoved down to the bottom of the barrel, then my scope after that. the scope is connected to a spring, which holds it in place until you put the dart in the hole in the barrel (which i also added a tube to go inside the dart, should help air loss), and then you release it and it snaps back in place.

EDIT: I tested it, it may still work, but my trials did REALLY bad. The hose exploded twice, and the air started leaking out from the handle? I have no idea why. I will continue to try to fix these, but i might need to start over (with the gun at least)

    Step 1

    Make the Air Tank-

You can make an air tank a couple of ways. #1 is you can just buy one, for like $30 on ebay (rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-117182-37290-0/2open_in_new), or use a bulkier tank, one of those white ones.

This is how to make a air tank outta a soda bottle. I think it holds 90 psi or something like that. anyways, you can join 4 together, and yeah. You know, if you don't have a propane tank (or don't want to risk an explosion). I tried this setup, it might just be me, but i really didn't trust it, and only got up to 80 psi. There's just not enough air.

OR you can make it out of a propane tank. Try at your own risk. I did a PVC one.

I like this one the most, mainly because i can pump it up a LOT and, at schedule 40, don't have to worry about it blowing up. That's the fear, because if it blows, it blows into fragments, which, i gather, can hurt. A lot. I changed the setup for air in/out. instead of having one for both, i got flat caps, and on the top, i drilled two holes- one for the nozzle, just connected to the hose, and the other for the tubeless tire valve. I can pump it up to about 115 psi, after that i get a bit queasy.

    Step 2

    Make the trigger/handle

    You need-

    1. Some form of spring loaded valve

    2. rubber tubing

    3. nozzle to connect to tube

you can see what i came up with below

One note on the nozzle/pipe connection- there is a tight o-ring on the nozzle under the tape

    Step 3

Barrel- use a piece of pvc the same size as the diameter of the dart, i don't know what that is right now. I also added a piece of pvc to the front to look as a silencer :D it looks really cool. Plus, one more thing, you can put a piece of pvc perpendicular to the barrel. You know, like a pistol grip. I'm going to leave mine flat, like a rifle. Plus, not sure how effective it is, but i added a piece of pvc, i don't know what it's from, but it makes a good scope.
