The Scorpion (Early Prototype)

A project log for Maker's Vise

The most general purpose hobby vise.

As our first update, I would like to show how far we've come since the beginning of April. Our first prototype, we are lovingly referring to as "the scorpion."

In our attempt at forcing the sliding mechanism to work smoothly, we fabricated a scorpion tail-like handle.

In the end, the mechanical grip strength of this type of slider mechanism was lacking. And, we wanted to move on to try other types of sliding mechanisms.

The Delrin is more expensive than the HDPE, but lower cost than Teflon. It's harder and stronger than Teflon but not as slippery.  Delrin is really really easy to machine beautifully.

The slider bearings are fashoined from Delrin.  It's a bit more of a durable material than Teflon and UHMW.  It's more expensive too, but not prohibitively so, because we're not using a whole lot of it.

The handle was made from Delrin because it was and "after-thought" and that's what we had laying around.. but if done in earnest, I think we would have used HDPE for this part.

Was that PTFE or something similar for the handle and sliders? Interesting. I did try UHMW tape before it seems to work well.
