4x4x6 Led Cube with Text Display

A monochromatic led cube capable of displaying text sent via a virtual serial port.

Powered by Arduino Leonardo. Uses 96 blue multiplexed leds. Will connect to a PC via serial to enable text to be sent to the cube. I may also implement a microphone to make it respond to sound like a vu Meyer.

  • 1 × Perfboard
  • 96 × Blue leds
  • 1 × Uln 2003 Darlington array
  • 1 × M74hc4017b1 Johnson counter

Nearly fnished soldering the circuit on perfboard. Resistors are hooked up to the arduino and then a ribbon cable. A Johnson counter and a Darlington transistor array are also attached together and then to the duino and ribbon cable. The cable then goes to the cube and is connected via female headers. Just a little more to do before I can test.

96 blue leds soldered together using a card template. My god this was time consuming But the cube is finally finished. Or so I thought. I then went to test some Leds and had my psu set to its highest seting by mistake. I had to order more leds and have now replaced the dead ones.

Hey there,
by any chance, can you upload some better pictures and maybe a video of it? I can't get enough of that blinky stuff ;) Any thoughts about a case? I put mine in a glass jar, looks nice - I may add a sensor so when I shake it, it will act like a snow globe. Seems like you used some transistors there, too?
