Dan DWRoboticsI guess it is worth at least once showing the very basics of designing a completely new device. Often you can do this in your head. I do this, usually when I am supposed to be asleep but just can't get a particular problem out of my head. Or many times you can do this directly in your CAD program of choice. But sometimes, and in fact many times, the very starting point is
........................... the rubbish drawings.
I have hundreds of these. Some I come back to again and again, to inform the later design process. Many times, there is no quicker way to decide which cables, cogs and axles are going where, than by just trying to draw it out on paper. So to break the monotony of actually designing the hand in sketchup, I thought I would take a break to share to the utterly ridiculous 'concept' drawings that eventually lead to solid printed items and the many rejected parts I have printed over the last couple of months.

Thanks Morning Star and Dr Cockroach. I'm really keen to give it a name, although it seems my creativity is running low. I want the name to embody 'affordability' but all of the english words that describe that make it sound cheap, which is obviously not very cool. I am going to look at the word in other languages and see if there is a good word that I can remix into a cool name. Econobot and Affordabot both sound lame!!!

Lol you got me there, I see what you mean. Austerity has kind of rubbed the lustre off that as a concept. Not cool indeed :-/
You could try giving it a personality, and naming him/her for that instead...? Descriptions of a thing are all very well, I noticed your design flow is from the ground up and you're building a thing. To me, something that complex isnt a thing any more, its at least a system. That gives you some latitude in naming things as well. AIME just happened, it was a while before I noticed it also translates to love in French for example and then it became a she, somehow.
I deliberately used an acronym because she was meant to be all Linuxy and handbuilt, thats another way of looking at a name. ;-)

Scarecrow actually sounds pretty cool, but I wouldn't want to name it anything that strikes fear into the maker/user, considering all the hyperbole around AI these days. I can imagine the headlines!!

I agree, not rubbish nor ridiculous at all. I think we all jot down notes and sketches just to keep an idea alive when we come back to it later. A kind of graphical shorthand so to speak :-)
