Description

What does one do when gifted with a dead laptop? Here's one answer: salvage its perfectly functional LCD panel and turn it into an external monitor that can fit in a backpack for portability.

Components

  • 1 × LP154W02 1680x1050 LCD display panel salvaged from an old Dell 15" Inspiron laptop
  • 1 × Panel driver circuit board set Searching on LCD panel model number will return Amazon and eBay vendors selling driver boards turning it into a HDMI monitor
  • 1 × Acrylic Sheet, 1.5mm To be laser-cut into front and back pieces of the enclosure.
  • 1 × Acrylic Sheet, 3mm To be laser-cut into the core component spine holding the screen and circuit boards.
  • 1 × Acrylic Sheet, 6mm To be laser-cut into the edge components providing structure to the enclosure.

For what it's worth, I did something similar and ended up with an laptop panel in a custom-ordered metal picture frame attached to a mic stand with a laser cut set of mounting plates https://blog.lmorchard.com/2017/01/09/diy-monitor-v12/
