Boards Arrived

A project log for Blinka

A minimal CircuitPython board.

The boards arrived from OSHPark and they look great:

One thing that I need to fix is the corner at the back of the neck (do snakes have a neck?) — make it a bit smoother, so that the CNC tool has room for cutting it. By the way, now we know how large a tool OSHPark uses.

Looks great!  And yes, they do have necks, it's just a bit harder to tell them apart from the rest of their bodies than in most animals.  Same goes for their tails.

Also, didn't we already know how big a tool OSH Park uses for routing board outlines?  http://docs.oshpark.com/submitting-orders/cutouts-and-slots/

Thanks. Well, I knew the number, but that doesn't really give me a good feel. Actually seeing it works much better for me. Also, it seems this is much larger than the 40mil mentioned on that page.

it says 100mil. 40mil is for plated slots.

this is awesome! excellent job with the graphics. i've found integrating pcb cut line into graphics to be tough; any undercuts end up looking rounded, so i usually try to keep outlines smooth(ish).

I guess I was lucky with the nyan board, and then assumed it's easy.

This is a beautiful, beautiful board! Is this just board art experiments, or something that might be functional in the future, too?

Well, it is a minimal CircuitPython board — it gives you REPL and a disk over USB. I'm making an updated version that will also have a LED in the eye and a piezo speaker on the DAC pin, so you should be able to play wav files on it. Other than that, it can act as a tiny file storage or you could program it to emulate keyboard or mouse and do something funny...

you  could give yourself some board room by making it round and make the background white, but then you lose the cool outline.

Actually a gold background would give it a nice "iconic" look, if you know what I mean...
