Shootback Camera

A worn camera (based on the Pi) that captures the last 30s (or more?) that just happened, directly to the card. Don't miss a moment.

The camera records everything into a circular buffer using PiCamera (which is a super rad project). When something happens, and you think, "I wish I had that on camera" just hit the button on the device and it saves that buffer to the memory card.

The end goal is to get something as small as possible with the compute module, and ideally take it to Kickstarter for manufacturing. If people are interested, of course.

Have you ever seen something happen where you wished you had a camera rolling? There are many events that occur where cameras are turned on, _just_ after the important moment. The Mike Brown shooting is a prime example of this, and what inspired this project to be completely open. If someone wants to take the concept private, by all means. In fact, I hope dearly that GoPro just enables this as a feature on its fleet of cameras. It could probably do so with a straightforward firmware upgrade.

But until then, and for the DIYers out there, this will be a valid option. The first iteration will be using a Raspberry Pi Model B in a Pibow case. Meaning, it won't be very wearable. However, it also dawned on me that mounting small earth magnets on the back of the case could be a great coupling with a keyfob and RF switch. That way, you could potentially have many cameras mounted (running on battery or plugged in), that would all capture what just happened with a push of a button. And it wouldn't require wifi or bluetooth. Just low power RF. In regards to those magnets, while that is a great quick mounting option, I need to make sure the electromagnetic field produced by them doesn't affect the board's electronics.

The hardest part when working on any side project is juggling that time with the rest of things your life.

This has been a particular challenge for me as of late.

However, because I work at a company that treats their engineers well (thank you again, Fullscreen!) we have regular hackathons. And one is coming up.

Since this project actually does kind of tie in with our audience, I'll be really cranking on this come December or January.

However, when I present it at the end of the hackathon, it will be mostly to promote catching the dogs that poop in our office. It's just a side effect of having a dog-friendly office, which is fine with me.

I've moved the files for this project into its own repo on Github finally: https://github.com/brandonaaskov/shootback-camera
