LinkOwl.net

A New, Free and Simple to use URL shortener for all to use

Similar projects worth following
Whilst websites such as Goo.gl and TinyURL.com work, I firstly find their designs overly convoluted for a service which should take a matter of a couple of seconds from arrival to leaving.

I also felt they were really missing out on providing more options without further cluttering their sites such as password protecting links and custom URLs.

I felt I could put together a website which offers the same service as these others with a better, more user friendly design and with extra tools for the end user.

So I created http://linkowl.net

In addition to creating permanent mini-links, LinkOwl also:
- Allows you to password protect your links
- Customize your links
- Create one mini link that directs to a list of multiple URLs.
- All with a simple, easy to use interface.

The site is now fully functional and open for anyone to use.

I am however still working on it to make it smoother and to add extra features.

The next big step I'm going to work on for this will be a browser plugin allowing automatic link conversion when copying URL links over a specified length with the option to still paste the original link in a right-click menu.

Let me know what you think, suggestions are always appreciated.

LinkOwl.net has just released it's latest update, which in addition to a number of security updates, now offers users the ability to create Link Lists.

A link list allows a user to supply up to 6 long URL's which will be saved as a list. When they create their short URL (Which can still be customized and password protected), they will get just one link which takes them to a LinkOwl page displaying each of their original links along with an optional note/description as shown below:

I never made any further modifications to the site. It's still active and I still use it myself on a daily basis but I don't really put any time into maintenance any more.

http://linkowl.net/report does not work if no captcha is filled in (forwards me to 404 page)

feature suggestsions: provide "human readable" shortcuts to be read from paper (alternating random vowels and consonants), API, QR-code output

Ah, I'll fix that straight away.
By human readable ones, I'm presuming you mean restricted generation only allowing dissimilar characters to fall after each other?
QR-Code output is a very fun idea so watch this space!
And as for an API, it is something that's definitely in the pipeline. I just want to get the main site a little tighter first then will aim to expand into that sort of area.
Again, thanks for the feedback! Greatly appreciated!
