Neopixel was a term coined by Adafruit a little while ago, but these LED strands have been around for a long time! You can find them all over Alibaba and Ebay if you know what to search for.

The great thing about Neopixels is that they make embedding many LEDs in one project simple. This is due to dedicated LED driver chips.

Red, green and blue LEDs are integrated alongside the WS2812/WS2811 driver chip into a tiny surface-mount package controlled through a single wire. Neopixels can be used individually, chained into longer strings or assembled into various form-factors.

Neopixels have very strict timing requirements, which makes them ideal for some use cases and terrible for others (i.e. POV).

Neopixels have different color and speed settings depending on the WS driver chip used.

MetaWear provides a Neopixel module that is accessible via the iOS API. Check out https://github.com/mbientlab for more details and documentation.

Also keep in mind Neopixels leak current, I used an extra large lithium battery for my project.
