Steampunk Backpack

A steampunkish backpack based on a kid's toy

I found an RC "Bug" robot at a local thrift shop, and thought it might make the perfect "power source" for my steampunk costumes. This is the ongoing build log.

The end result of this project is to make a neat looking "Steampunk" style backpack, with lights and motion. Perhaps even steam!

I'm starting wth a Tyco "NSECT" RC robot bug as the base. It looks like this to start:

So far, I've ripped all the internal parts out, leaving just this:

And now it's been painted in flat black, ready for a fresh coat of paint.

I'm currently designing a set of gears/tubes/whatever to go under the wings, and protrude out the side ports.

I've often thought this copper tape would look good with steampunk devices.

You could use it to give sections of your backpack a metallic look.

The computer case gives some idea of scale but I'm hoping to talk you into using some other objects/people in future photos to provide a better idea of how big the backpack will be.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

Great choice so far! Gotta love some painted and repurposed toys :)

You may want to add one of those pictures as the project "profile" picture, the shape is more attractive then the "photo coming soon" default.
