Simple LCD Projector

Using any LCD available, few LEDs and a magnifying glass you can create a simple projector.

It ain't really fun to stare at the tiny screens so I thought of ways to make it bigger. The first idea I had was to project it, but how? I finally took the LCD apart and after ruining a few I managed to build a decent projector that displays clear (and colorful) picture! You can really make your projects much nicer, cheaply. (I made snake .-. game) If you are doing this the first time, try a cheap calculator first.


The image quality projected heavily depends on every component. So if you manage to get a LCD and magnifying glass with no scratches, the quality is quite good. On the pictures you can see a cheap chinese calculator projected to a wall, there's a light leak as there's no enclosure. I have built a better screen (that even does RGB) but I haven't got pictures of it. Remember that this isn't some high grade projector and it's purely a fun project when you have a few spare LCDs and calculators. (Tip: Try it on a cheap LCD first, you might ruin the first one)

Tips:

1) Don't scratch the screen or polarizing filters

2) Don't burn down the house

3) Do not do this while the LCD is powered on

4) Do not bend the LCD

5) Do not squish the LCD

6) Do not destroy the rubber conductor

7) The LCD has to work after removing the back and putting LEDs there

  • 1 × LCD Screen Doesn't matter what kind. The bigger it is, the stronger light source and bigger lense you need.
  • 1 × Magnifying glass made out of glass The bigger and higher quality it is the better.
  • 2 × LED Doesn't matter what kind or light source you use, high intensity LEDs are usually the best choice.
  • 1 × Cardboard or any light blocking thing.

    Step 1

    Acquire the LCD screen, make sure it works.

    Open the enclosure carefully.

    Unscrew the screen, make sure all connector stay connected (or the rubber conductors), they are hard to connect back.

    Depending on the screen, some have reflecting/blocking layers behind the screen, remove it CAREFULLY and make sure you don't remove the polarizing filters (Should have one on both sides)

I added a few pictures, the image on the wall could be better because my magnifying glass is a bit scratched and could be better. This is overall, the first working prototype.

EDIT: I have no pictures of the RGB one, I unfortunately decided so take some components for another project, I'll see what I can do.
