The idea is to build a case for a red/orange 7 segment display that will make it look like an old school nixie tube.
I first started by cutting a piece of stripboard to hold the display.
I then removed the green paint from the front since i did not think it would match the rest of the parts.
The cage around the display will be made of an old plastic card that will be painted to look like copper plate. The plastic card is formed and a couple of larger holes were cut in the stripboard to enable the plastic to clip into the board.
The board is then hold up by a bent paper clip and another board that will be the base. The paperclip will also be used to transmit the power to the display and the ground lead for each segment will be transmitted by a resistor down to the base.
The display is then soldered to the board as well as a small led. The idea is that the small led will provide a red glow on the side of the screen. The paperclip is also soldered the board.
The last part is to add a net to the front of the plastic cage, then paint the cage and wire up the display. This is the final result.
And here is a picture of the display in action:
The backlight did not work as expected tho, and i think it is due to the holes in the board is leaking too much light backwards.
I might try to make to make the backlight flicker to give it an unstable look. I have not decided if I am going to put the components in a glass tube or if i am going to build a holder to make it look like it has been removed from the tube for some reason.
