I have always looked on in awe at Modular synths like Keith Emersons, and figured I would never be able to play anything like it. Recently I joined a local Hacker space who have started a project to build an old Elektor Formant and I realised that it was within my reach to make one.

I've also always had a fascination with steampunk, and I think that a steampunk inspired analog synth is a match made in heaven. I have some ideas from browsing other peoples steampunk synths, and can't wait to see how it takes shape.

To start with I'm going to build a basic set of modules, VCO, VCA, Power board, and CV/Gate output in an old keyboard (yet to be purchased). The whole thing will be custom form factor, and completely SMT, which means taking existing through hole design, sourcing SMD equivalents, and redesigning the board layout.

I will be getting the PCB's made from a service, but will do all the soldering myself, probably reflow.
