Blackbox - Highend 3D Printer

Blackbox is a highend CoreXY 3D Printer. Aiming for reasonable build volume, fast printspeeds and high resolution.

Blackbox is my third printer and im currently at the third revision. The first two printer i made were nice but suffered a few issues, a t-slot based Prusa kinda Printer i made with (which is still used for experiments at my University) and a pretty but fairly overdesigned singleframe printer both made with fellow students. I think i learned my lessons and after years of reading passively im ready to open source my design. Please contact me if you got questions or if you want to collaborate!

The Concept:
Blackbox is based on a quite oversized 40x40 T-slot frame. The XY Axis ist driven by a CoreXY mechanism guided by miniature linear rails. Z-Axis is currently ball screw driven but i will swap them for a belt driven z-axis. Most parts are easy to print with very few overhangs. Accessibility is very important to me, so all parts of the housing are removed within seconds thanks to magnets. The Printer will be fully enclosed in its final stage, so it should get pretty chill in there.

Frame size: 570x520x428mm

Print Volume: 300x300x200mm (z-axis is pretty easy to scale)

Board: currently Ultratronics ->Duet in the future

Driver: Leadshine DM422C -> TMC2660 in the future

Extruder: Bondtech BMG Extruder (reworked)

Hotend: E3D Kraken -> Microswiss MK10 with custom watercooling in the future

Heatbet: Filafarm Switchplate

Belt: Gates GT3 2mm tooth offset, 9mm width

X-Rail: Smalltec MR 9-M (MGN9?)

Y-Rail: Smallted MR 9W 

Z-Axis: 16mm Rods, Ballscrew -> Belt driven in the Future, 12mm Rods

Frame Materials: T-Slot 40x40, 20x20, 20x60

Housing: Lasercut Acryl with magnetic fixings

  • 5 × 40x40 T-Slot Profile Aluminium Profiles 40x40 size, i used profiles with two clean sides but this is optional. 1 Quantity = 1m
  • 2 × 20x60 T-Slot profile Aluminium Profiles 20x60 size
  • 1 × MK10 Heaterblock It´s a real pain to get quality MK10 Heatblocks, if you fid some tell me. Im using Wanhao ones currently.
  • 3 × 20x20 T-Slot profile Aluminium Profiles 20x20 size for the Heatbed
  • 4 × Linear Bearings 12mm, housed compact version For Z-Axis

  • Introducing the BOM

    I started the Blackbox BOM, i don´t know whats the best way to keep track of all the Items but until now im using a google docs excel sheet:

    The Price (Without Acryl Housing, Screws Nuts and Watercooling) should be around 1400€. 

    Yes, this is not a cheap Printer but it could be dropped way down with cheaper retailers. If you want to collaborate on this BOM just contact me.

    These are the current CAD Files for the Blackbox Printer. I don´t recommend replicating it yet!!! I didn´t planed to release the files so early but due to request i decided to change my plans. Most Parts are untested. The Frame howeever is final and will not be changed.

    It would be really nice if you would share Feedback, Ideas and toughts!

    This will be the new (and huge) Update for the Blackbox.

    Major Changes:

    • Carbon supported X-Axis
    • Extruder carriage (Draft)
    • Custom Bondech Extruder (Draft)
    • Motor Brackets
    • Pulley Brackets
    • Belt driven Z-Axis (Draft)
    • Watercooled Toolchanger (Draft)
    • New User Interface (7x15px LED Matrix) (Draft)

    As you can see it´s quite a List, im currently focusing on the XY Axis. Motor Brackets, Pulley Brackets and the X-Axis are ready to test. As soon as im done with the Extruder Carriage and Custom Bondtech i will order them from Shapeways and test them. I want to be done with XY update by 11.03.18.

    X and Y linear Rails

    These are the new Linear Rails and bearings i got from Smalltec: MR-9 M for X and 2x MR-9 W

    New X-Carriage with custom PCB adapter boards with Micromatch flatcable. The carriage consists of basically two printed parts. 

    The small gaps you see are for Carbon strips which i want to glue on there in order to enhance strengh in Z-direction.

    Carriage weights around 620g with everything but the Cablechain, printed Extruder Parts and Hotend/cooler. I think it will end up with around 700-750g in the end. In comparison, my current X-Axis with Openbeam (Alu t-slot) weights more than 1.5kg.

    The new Pulley Bracket, two parts with cones to ensure that the outer ring of the bearings doesn´t touch the Bracketsurface. New Motor bracket in the Background.

The lamp was a project during my sixth semester years ago. Every segment can be controlled individially via DMX. Here are more Informations:

hope so! I get the impression your design is somewhere in the space I was converging on. I showed it to some other folks with similar interests and the consensus was if you open source it we’ll attempt a build.
