Description

FlashProg is USB base flash memory programmer to work with 3.3V serial flash memory devices. This programmer is specifically design to read, program and configure 25x series, serial flash memory devices which are commonly used to store BIOS in PC mainboards.

FlashProg programmer is built around Atmel ATmega8A microcontroller with standard through-hole type components and it support for both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows and Linux operating systems. All the compiled binaries for both the platforms are available at project home page at flashprog.sourceforge.net.

This programmer use very few components and it can be easily constructed on breadboard or on PCB. Both EAGLE and PDF versions of PCB design files are available with the project package.

This project is an open source hardware project and all it’s source codes, design files and documentation are available at flashprog.sourceforge.net.

FlashProg programmer schematic is illustrated in below:

For this project ATmega8 microcontroller needs to be operate on 3.3V with 12MHz clock, therefor ATmega8A microcontroller need to be used with this project and ATmega8 or ATmega8L are not compatible with this project.

All the supported chips for IC2 are listed in supported devices section of project documentation.

PCB is the most recommended way to construct this project but it can also be build on breadboard or on veroboard as shown in the above photograph.

1 × 78L33 Discrete Semiconductors / Diodes and Rectifiers
2 × 68R resistor 1/4W or 1/8W resistor
1 × 1.5K resistor 1/4W or 1/8W resistor
1 × 1M resistor 1/4W or 1/8W resistor

Hi man, I've flashed a mega8 (no A) and try to connect usb port only, PC reported USB unrecognized device as PID/VID zero. I thought even mega8 will not work as you mentioned, it should be recognized as libusb device OK, right? What's wrong? does the firmware itself check MCU not a real mega8A and refuse to boot?

Why are you saying that Atmega8 is not compatible since Atmega8 -16PU runs at 16Mhz (Atmega8A is just an update version of Atmega8 -16PU)?

Hi Jim, this programmer support 25xx series flash memory chips only and its not designed to work with R8C series MCUs.
