We're using a precision scale to tell when medication has been removed from a pill case. This is connected via arduino and Twilio to send text alerts to caregivers to let them know when a loved one takes (or doesn't take) their medication.

Since you're using a Raspberry Pi, I would recommend trying out the camera module as well. At the least, it would document what was taken by snapping a photo when the pill box is opened. Ideally, it could then process that using OpenCV to guess which medications were in that cell.
