Cheap laser lens
Find these in $1 lasers or old CD drives.
The type that you get when you buy asparagus.
A decent lens like this can do wonders! We used one from a DVD player to count stomata on a leaf and measure their length. Of course it also makes for some awesome macro images of flies, flowers etc :)
