We won the bulbdial kit in the 2015 hackaday weekly draw and decided that it would be a good father/son project. This is his build log.
He has never soldered or even touched electronics components before. This is going to be really fun or over in 15 minutes. Let's find out....
Components
1×
4 year old
This 4 year old was made in Japan. Other Sources will probably work as well
1×
Soldering Iron
Just a normal temperature controlled soldering Iron. Nothing fancy. Set to 325C
1×
Solder
Typical solder. May use lead free solder.
We didn't take many pictures on day three. It's lots of the same thing, but Kininja is enjoying it.
One mistake on day two was caught on day three. The LEDs on the green platter were all put and soldered on the wrong side of the board. A bit of solder wick fixed that. I guess I should have been taking less pictures and paying attention more.
I had no idea how he would do. He loves LEGO and puzzles. I thought he would enjoy it, but wasn't sure how much he would be able to do. He started with a few resistors as I watched and tried hard to let him do it himself and not make sure everything was "how I would do it"
He was concentrating pretty hard, but was enjoying.
Checking the instructions:
Now on to the soldering. I'm going to be honest, that made me a bit nervous at first.
Sorry about that. We are done, but I haven't been able to update this project. Iwill try to do so soon. I have to tell you it was a lot of fun! Thanks for following!
I haven't seen anything since day 3. How did the power-up and checkout go? This is pretty amazing for a 4 year old. Kudos to him and to you for what must require a lot of patience on your part. It's good to see a father and son working together and not just buried in their phones and tablets.
Any updates still coming?
