Feeling the pressure

A project log for AYTABTU - Discrete Computer

After the apocalypse we have to build computers from stuff we can make at home, I.E Transistors, diodes and resistors.

This project is starting to get a serious amount of skulls and followers which on one hand is nice, but on the other hand is giving me pressure to actually move forward in a decent speed - no slacking off here :-)

Well, just as an update of what I'm currently doing the last few days:

The emulator now loads code, sends logdata via udp and have a simulated UART on a tcp port.

I've also started working on the ALU bitslice for that can handle all 16 operations my instruction set mandates. I'm doing that in both in the simple Falstad circuit simulator for the overall view of it with logical blocks, and also on transistor level in LTspice to check timings/performance.

Hopefully the ALU design will be done this week so I can solder up one of the eight slices plus the control logic for it on perfboard, run some basic tests and then send for a full set of slice pcbs from dangerous prototypes after the tests.

Nah, the "pressure"  part shoulds have been with tongue in cheek. I wasn't really serious there.

It actually is kinda good that people are interested, because otherwise I'd most likely just taper off the time spent on it gradually and eventually stopped altogether when something else caught my attention/interest.  Now I have an incentive to continue, both for the followers and for my self -it would feel awesome to actually finalize this at least to the degree that I can run some real code on the physical hardware.

When I get that far I'd probably would like to bring the unit to barcamps and maker faires, I hope that I can make it at least semi-portable :-)

But it's true that I didn't expect this much attention for this project - I didn't even submit it to the HAD Tipline...

I hope you don't see my 'following' as a pressure for success. You're making a very interesting job here, and it's up to you to decide the rhythm ;) Actually thanks a lot for sharing your adventure so far, and I'm sure we the followers will continue to be pleased.
