There's one last issue that needs to be addressed with the new design and chassis: How to connect the BNC jacks on the front and back panels to the board.
Originally, a 2x3 DIP header was put on the board. And that's still the way it is now. The problem is that when you connect female cable-mounted SIP heads up to the pins, the whole thing is too tall to fit in the case.
At the moment, the interim solution is to use a right-angle DIP header, but the only way that can fit is with the pins facing the inside of the board, meaning the whole thing has to fit above the SOIC-8 clock buffer chip. So the pins need to carefully be inserted only part way into the holes. It's all kind of dodgy.
And then there's the issue of the wires not being shielded. In principle, that means the potential for increased phase noise. If they were balanced pairs, then they could be twisted, but they're not. But I don't think it's worth using U.FL connectors and cables for this - that's just too much expense and trouble for a 10 MHz square wave.
So I think what's needed is some sort of miniature version of a 2 pin SIP header. If I multiplied that by 3, it'd be solved. But I would want to get both the board mount (either through-hole or SMD is fine) male connector and the cable-mounted female (with the two wires already installed) connectors, because I don't really want to invest in a crimper, nor invest the time in trying to make those up. I just want to strip the wires on the end and solder them to the BNCs.
Does anyone have any good suggestions?
EDIT: It looks like the best long-term solution may be JST 2.5mm shrouded SIP connectors. Pololu sells the female connector pigtails and DigiKey stocks the TH male headers. But it's yet another board redesign to make room for them. And I just sent a design for fabrication to move the power connector back 50 mils. Grumble.
