In the wild + PCB spraypaint lasering

A project log for CD/DVD mechanisms and cartesian thinggie[s?]

DVD-laser-etcher, dremmel-router, possibly a 3D printer? Who knows!

UPDATE (9-22-15): Someone on youtube has built one! Video at the bottom.

UPDATE: David has a great write-up on spray-paint-lasering PCBs:

https://hackaday.io/project/6180-dna-lamp-diagnostic-device/log/24663-laser-assisted-pcb-fabrication

---------------------------

@SUF and @Radu Motisan found these prebuilt laser-engravers (photo/links below) while looking into using laser for PCB-etching. The idea being: Spraypaint the PCB, then etch the paint away with a laser. Something David (who's not showing up in the dropdown list: https://hackaday.io/hacker/15795) is currently doing with CO2 lasers. The jury's out on whether these lasers would be powerful enough to burn away the spraypaint, but maybe a different type of paint...?

These are the laser-engravers:

They look suspiciously like CD/DVD mechanisms!

This ain't mine, but it's cool to see it in action!

sorry for the slow reply, been very busy with http://www.uradmonitor.com/model-d-production-ready/ . Any news on this?

None on this particular front, but it's definitely a design I'm keeping in mind in all the other endeavors leading up to it. It seems steppers are the de-facto, so I'm looking into them a bit. And burning out laser-diodes left and right, so I'm pondering a safer driver-circuit.

Thanks again for the link, and good luck on the uradmonitor!

Nice find!

Agreed. And the mounting-method is pretty smart... no moving parts on moving parts.

I've seen them too just recently, got me into buying laser diodes and drivers :D I want to put that on my dorment 3D printer..
