• 5.0 - Arrival

Hey everyone, yesterday I received the parts from Shapeways. I test fitted the components and everything lined up perfectly. The part was also stronger than I had expected, and the handles easier to hold than I had expected. Although there are two problems that I found with the print. First the bolt holes to attach the PiScreen to the mount were slightly to small for the bolts (.2mm to small), second the tabs which connect the top to the base were not on the print at all... So it seems that I made a mistake uploading the .stl to Shapeways.

I plan to bring this project to the Hackaday SuperConference, which is only 17 days from now so there is no way I can get a whole new mount by then. So as a quick solution I have ordered the tabs by themselves and plan to glue them to the mount (will get the tabs around the 7th).

I have uploaded a revised version of the top portion of the mount to Shapeways for purchase at cost here, or you can download the .stl files for the new version here. The new version has both of the previously mentioned problems fixed, as well as a few other small changes. Also you may have noticed the FLIR Lepton/Raspberry Pi Camera mount attached to the top, this part will soon be available for purchase/print as well.

Ok, I finally finished with the modeling. It took quite a bit of testing and revisions to get keep the cost reasonable (based on Shapeways price).

I think I finally found a good balance of cost while maintaining the features that I wanted to include. On the top are two holes which can accommodate a 1/4" bolt (camera tripod mount size thread). I will go more into what that is specifically for in a future post. At the bottom is space for a large (or small) USB battery, the battery also helps keep the center of mass low. On the sides are handles, although I really wanted them to be a bit bigger (see above); but they really added a lot to the cost of the print so I had to keep them smaller.

Both parts are available here and here for print (at cost) or you can also download the models here (zip). I have already ordered both parts, which I should get around the end of this month. So until then it will just be waiting.

Today I added some tabs for the stand, this makes it removable so it will be easier to hold. I also spent some time removing excess material to lower the printing cost. More coming soon

  • 2.0 - A bit of modeling.

Today I had a few spare hours to start modeling the Pi Screen, USB battery, and the start of the case. Lots of measuring and re-measuring later and I have this:

(credit goes to jayftee on thingiverse for his Pi2 model)

When I finished modeling the Pi Screen I began modeling the case:

This is a very early version, I still need to add handles, a stand with the capability of securely holding a usb battery, and a good way to mount both cameras safely as well as close enough that the ribbon and cables will reach.

Stay tuned for more in the near future!

I have been planning on starting this project for awhile now and yesterday I decided to go to the Hackaday Meetup in Pasadena, CA. I thought I should bring something cool to show, so I threw together a very early version of this project over the course of a few hours.

Three shelf brackets, some screws, a bit of duct tape... Although it isn't pretty and not terribly durable either, it works!

In this project I will be designing a custom 3D printable part which will securely attach to the piscreen, and allow for the mounting of a pi camera, and Lepton thermal imager with breakout board. It will be easy to hold, portable, and able to safely protect the parts that make it work.
