Remote controlled ball

I like abstract things moving around. A marble or a ball is perfect for this.

This project is all about a self moving ball. Most people don't expect balls moving by themselves. I want to build this thing since 8 years now to make fun with people. So I finally decided to do this as a small side project because the laser cutter still needs a long time and work to do.

Part one of the "RC BALL" is done: Ordering the parts. I ordered a big Hamsterball (Diameter: 25m) and a small RC Car to use the remote control an the circuit later.

I ordered this ball:http://ferplast.com/de/shop/zubehor-fur-kleintier/produkte-fur-hamster/pa-5220-baloon-small

And a small RC car which fits into the opening of the hamster ball.

The next steps will be to disassemble the RC car and reconstruct the car to be able to make the ball self rolling.

The hamster ball needs some refurbishment. First I need to cut out the handles an then I use tape to smoothen the inner surface.

Finally I will make a exchangeable skin which can look like a furry ball, or a basket ball or whatever. IN long term maybe inductive charge of the battery could be done. Then I could use a real ball (volleyball) to make it move.

For now I did some experiments with the RC car inside the ball. It's rolling. That's the good news. The idea itself works, now it needs to be optimized.

I used kind of this hamster ball. The kitten is a good example to show the actual size:

(Remarks: I found out that a half hamster ball is a very nice parabolic reflector to put a microphone inside. Yesterday at night I recorded an airplane using this parabolic mic. It works great!)

For the RC car I decided to buy a "Mini Truggy Running Dog", because ist very small and fits into the hamster ball opening and it has a "speed" mode, which provides the needed power after the project is finished. The nice thing is that everything is included (lipo battery, charge controller, etc.)
