The dual mode PCB was a neat idea. Yet I think it is possible to use the same side of the board for both SMD/Conventional components placement.

You have a right sure it is possible. That would enlarge PCB I think. 

One of the target was also possibility to use 4 pin on each side of the breadboard.

Have a look on this picture where you have breadboard and Arduino Micro.

As soon as I have a spare time I will give it a try. Maybe it is possible to keep the same size. You are using the resistor as a pullup for the Reset and a decoupling capacitor on Vcc, right?
