KiCad has rapidly evolved over the last few years and is one of the leading open source EDA packages now. With CERN committing development time and introducing exciting features such as Push and Shove routing, differential pair matching and more, KiCad can be a powerful tool in any hackers kit bag.

The goal of this short workshop will be to walk through KiCad basics so you are able to get started. This will involve designing a simple design from sketch to gerber. Most likely, we will build a linear regulator board based on the LM317 or the 78xx series.

The workflow will be :

  1. Schematic
  2. Netlist
  3. PCB layout
  4. Library Management
  5. Gerber generation
  6. Bill of Materials
  7. 3D renders
  8. SPICE simulation (this will actually be a different, workshop taken by Tom Anderson "Learn Circuit Simulation using SPICE". Tom will use the Netlist generated from the KiCad schematic.

I'll add more details here as we near the SuperConference. Feel free to ask questions, either here or over at group messaging.

Yes. If we have time, we'll cover some aspects of 3D export to FreeCad so it may help if you also have FreeCAD installed.

Do we only need to install KiCad prior to the workshop?
