When I was just starting out, I worked on CP/M machines. 'Never could afford one, so I finally decided to build one of my own.
My parents liked my garage-door controller but didn't want to use a Web browser to see the status. I decided to build a touch-screen display to let them see the state of their garage door and control it by touching the screen.
I used an 80's-era MC6801 microprocessor, married with an ESP8266 to create an IoT garage-door monitor and control system. I wrote about this project in an article for Circuit Cellar: https://tinyurl.com/yckwnmkn
