PC104 is essentially the PC ISA bus in stacking connectors and a beer-mat size board. The buffer drive spec is reduced from 20 to about 5 boards, reflecting the number of boards most people were likely to use. It took over the embedded market when the PC became the de-facto standard platform. The bus signals are based on the 8086.
