0x01 notes for the future - can anyone have too many displays? | davedarko

Almost three years ago I bought some 0805 cyan LEDs to make a tiny stargate inspired display. Since I haven't figured out any markings and wasn't able to hand solder them the project was on ice. Last week I've revisited the idea and designed some pcbs that are fool proof in terms of orientation making it easy to place LEDs in one direction without knowing anode or cathode. With some solder paste and my toaster oven I hope to achieve a good result ending with 3 boards - hours - minutes - seconds - that I will put on some perfboard arduino/74hc595 timer/watch thing.

Raspberry Pi Stuff

Plans for an arduino based raspberry pi shield are forming, I definitely want some goodies on there like controlling ws2812b, 5V fan controller (yes a fan...), 433mHz module connector, SD card logger, current measurements, reset button, shutting down button. Kind of bummed out that my raspberry crashes when I make a picture with the camera module and ssh is poorly slow.

Do you remember where you got the 0805 Cyan LEDs?
What kind of LEDs have you got?
What are the white "Description Layer" Bars for?
BTW: Did you use EAGLE? Have you modified the Pinhead Layout?
Those are rather tiny, but i also managed to use 0603 LEDs on perfboard ;-)
Somehow i have a feeling as the LEDs are oriented the wrong way? In this case the "digits" got wider than taller.
I wonder that you haven't brought this up for the Had Sci-Fi-Contest ;-)
But anyhow nice Project, I'm looking forward for your next steps, even if they begin next year ;)

Got 100 of them from eBay once, "Osram LCLM67S Cyan" - but can't find anything on them now. By kind you mean what, low vs. high current?

Those bars are an optical help to spot the top, inspired by the "keep clear" marks in the gate room and mechanical drawings from my school time.

Yes eagle indeed - those pinheaders are "my" standard ones, but I don't like them because they are wider than 0.1". I must have used a library with them in there. Any tips for a good pinheader library?

About the orientation - I was going for 90degrees before, but they got too tall for my taste - here is a video of a display I made with rectangular LEDs where I also went for this orientation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p39FEcSKcg

Well I should have done this as well, I guess, but I was all about having one project to focus on for the contest. Fun fact: with a little software modification I could hack in some stargate ancient fonts into my fake nixie clock - or any project with an 3x5 matrix for that matter.

I'm back in the Harz area for the sixth time this year so it seems indeed unlikely for me to come back with some updates on this before christmas. I have a trinket with me and am motivated to get a project out here to join the contest though, but I still have no idea.

I like the Osram Brand ;) by kind of LED i meant the Type of LED, i was curious to look at the Datasheet/Pricing ;)

The Bars look nice, hope they don't interfere with the Solderstopmask. You could also consider to add an All white Face, especially for white leds, it should look better (My 7x5 LED Matrices show all an greenish appearance...)

In eagle i used the "default" ones for "mail-order-production" pcbs. For etching we modified them somehow looking like yours ;) But using 0.1" grid should be crucial if you want to create the "Mainboard" on perfboard (Even if not). Is the horizontal distance also a multiple of 0.1"?

Awesome SW reuse is always nice ^^ I Also used my "sparkling tree" SW for my next project.

I've tried the bmp import once and placed our company logo on some boards :) but thanks for the tip! I will add some more logos to the mainboard and case - still have some stickers like I used on my old notebook:

Ha, stupid me! :D I paid 7,18EUR for 100. I never had problems with the solder stop mask on OSHPark before - what could have been white was always golden. Cyan on purple might look a bit weird, that's true :D

Hmmm... my humble opinion is, that you didn't align the Parts to the Grid... Have you tried to press CTRL before and during you click on it to move around?
