PCBs arrived!
07/25/2014 at 01:32 • 0 commentsOh man... that beautiful purple package. Living in Canada is generally wonderful - except when you want to get things shipped cheaply and quickly you're out of luck. It takes about a month to get PCBs from OSHpark to my front door, but I don't mind since it's so cheap and high quality!
I test fit the two different types of LCD screens that I made footprints for - they fit!I soldered up the board along with the LCD on the right, since it's nicer and doesn't need a contrast adjustment.
Here's a closeup video of soldering the QFP microcontroller:
That's all for now...

PCBs ordered
07/25/2014 at 01:25 • 0 commentsI sent off the board to OSHPark on December 31st 2013. New years was fun!
Here are the renders... Don't you just love that colour?
The top of the board. You can see the RJ45 connector that will connect to the OBD2 port on the left. Below that is the power switch, the fuse, a reverse polarity protection diode, the SP7805 regulator, the LD1117 regulator and then finally the end of the power supply section: the power indication LED (3V3_ON).
Then you can see to the right, three 10k resistors which will act as pullups for the input pushbuttons (back of PCB). Then above is the 'P3' expansion port, the uSD card socket, the JTAG/Serial Wire programming port, and at the top is some LCD circuitry.
In the middle of the board is the brain: the LPC11c14, with its crystal oscillator and capacitors. To the left is the MCP2561 CAN transciever chip, three jumpers to connect several other buses to the microcontroller, and above that are some resistors and a capacitor circuitry for the CAN bus.
Finally we have the LM335 and its pullup resistor near the middle top of the board, its so big compared to everything else, I'll have to find a smaller temperature sensor.
The other side of the board, with a jumper to decide what voltage your LCD runs at. As well, there are two footprints for two differen LCD screens here. The three input buttons are located on the bottom, as well as some test points.
