Linux and Free Open Source Software
Downloading the Spirit of Community to Your Computer

A presentation / demonstration by Mark Dammer

Bring along your laptop (PC or Mac) and try it out!

Friday 20th January 2017

7:30pm Garden Room / Findhorn Village Centre (Moray, Scotland)

Once a month the T-Exchange, Moray Firth Makerspace, is hosting a variety of creative projects. The January meeting will start with a short introduction into the philosophy and a demonstration of the Linux Operating System by Mark Dammer.

Instead of being at the mercy of a few corporations, bound by license fees, threatened by viruses, or by a design that forces you to buy new and expensive hardware, you can run your computer with software that is easy to use, safe, stable and completely free – free as in “freedom”. Software that has no restrictions, that can be legally copied or modified and that is developed and supported by worldwide online communities.

It does not matter if you want to do office tasks, surf the web and play games, or if you want to set up a digital recording studio, edit video or even create sophisticated 3D animations – it all can be done free and open source. Last but not least older computers that give up on today’s bloated and resource hungry operating systems can often still work fine with Linux.

After the short presentation you will have the opportunity to gain some hands-on experience of the free operating system. Mark and other T-Exchange members will be available for questions and help.

Bring your own laptop! You can try Linux on your own PC or Mac without the need to install, delete or modify anything - it runs directly from a USB stick that will be provided. Or simply watch others have a go at Linux.

Mark Dammer works as an IT consultant and Ethical Hacker. He is a fellow of the Free Software Foundation Europe and has been working with Linux for now over 20 years.
