Raspberry Pi Foundation has set a goal of introducing inexpensive products which are affordable and extremely useful for everyone. Therefore, Raspberry Pi 3 does not contain a PCle connector, SATA or USB C. Instead, it features a new CPU that is quad-core Broadcom BCM2837 64-bit ARM Cortex A53 that runs at 1.2 GHz. This implies that the Raspberry Pi 3 is almost 50% faster than the previous version. The graphic capabilities by the VideoCore IV GPU along with 1GB of LPDDR2-900 SDRAM are the two features that the Raspberry Pi 3 shares with Pi 2.

THE RASPBERRY PI 3 AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

The new Raspberry Pi is simply known as an inexpensive hub for Internet of Things devices due to its built-in wireless connectivity. It provides cheap and flexible basis for more modern connected gadgets. As it contains a 2.5 amps power source, it is capable of powering USB devices that are more complex, without an additional power cable. Considering the chipset, it can be deduced that Pi 3 would be able to operate in Client mode and Access Point mode at the same time. What this means is, that it can join on a wireless network to get its internet connection; and concurrently, give another network as an access point to a cloud of sensors. They will be redirecting the sensor network farther from a networking having humans, games consoles and laptops; and help the original network reach places where it wouldn’t have otherwise.

If you want to have a quick view of the dynamic Raspberry Pi 3, here is a short list of its full specifications:

  • GPU: VideoCore IV multimedia – 400MHz
  • CPU: Quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex A53 (at 1.2 GHz)
  • Memory: 1 GB LPDDR2 – 900 MHz
  • 4 USB ports
  • Bluetooth: 4.1
  • Video outputs: composite video (NTSC and PAL) using 3.5 mm jack, HDMI
  • Peripherals: HAT ID bus, 17 GPIO and specific functions.
  • Power Source: 5 V via GPIO header or MicroUSB
  • Weight: 1.6 oz.
  • Size: 85.60mm × 56.5mm
  • Network: 802.11n Wireless LAN and 10/100Mbps Ethernet
  • Analyzing these specifications and features that Raspberry Pi 3 provides, we can say Pi 3 is the only board that fulfills the promise of getting students take some interest in computer science. It is not only inexpensive, but it is also a perfect choice for giving out to elementary school students. It would not be just a fancy thing for tech aficionados, but it can help students use it effectively to do homework, and learn practical uses of many things.
